Speech by Professor Michelle Alexander at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.
Michelle Alexander speaks about the issue of the ‘war on drugs’ in the US and reveals the real politics behind it. With an admirable strength and courage she uncovers the real political purposes under the guise of fighting the ‘terrible drug expansion’.
She explains with clarity that the War on Drugs was never about the drug addiction and the harm caused by drug abuse: all that the War Drugs was about was targeting exclusively poor communities of colour.
She stresses that both the Republicans and Democrats supported the War on Drugs and implemented inhumane policies which always affected the disadvantaged black communities, despite the fact that the statistical data very often provided evidence that white and middle class people use drugs much more than poor and marginalized people of colour.
She touches upon the fact that the Drug War is mostly waged in poor black communities, where it is easier for the authorities to arrest black and poor people and get away with it.
It is a really powerful, touching speech delivered by such a strong personality as Michelle Alexander, who does not stop fighting for a fairer system of justice and laws, based on the respect for all human beings and their dignity.
